How to build country-size intuition

Country Size Ranking focuses on land area. A useful starting set is Russia, Canada, China, the United States, Brazil and Australia; these create reference points for the rest of the world. From there, compare medium-size countries by continent and shape instead of trying to memorize square-kilometer figures.

Long, narrow countries can look larger or smaller than they really are on a map projection, and island groups can be especially deceptive. Ranking three countries side by side helps correct those visual biases. The skill you are practicing is not arithmetic—it is a more accurate mental sense of how much land each country occupies.
